What We Did (2015)

15 years after the mysterious suicide of high school student Kay Hofman, the police have invited six of her friends and her former English teacher back to their old school to re-open her case. Revisiting the places of their youth they stumble across long-forgotten memories and soon find themselves in a labyrinth of jealousy, betrayal and hate, in which many questions have been left unanswered: Why did Kay’s former English teacher quit her job only weeks after the tragic incident? Why does Kay’s former boyfriend not want to talk about the past? Why is everybody still suspicious of the “new girl”, who arrived only weeks before Kay’s death? Why does Kay’s greatest rival still maintain that she was happy to see her dead? And finally, with so many facts still in the dark, how can the police be sure that Kay really killed herself?

Dear members of Thadden English Drama Club,

First of all, I must thank you for your incredible bravery in tackling a new piece of writing that was not only constantly changing, but also in a foreign language! Chatting with Nick about your progress, determination, and enthusiasm inspired me every time we spoke. Hearing about your passion refueled me whenever I felt blocked and made the writing process a truly fulfilling experience. It has been a massive honor to have had the opportunity to write for such spirited students.

I wish that I could be with you to see this work realized, but I will be thinking of you all each night you perform. I encourage you to continue creating and discovering new ways in which to tell the stories that are important to you. Once again, thank you for allowing me to write for you and for dedicating your valuable time, brilliant energy, and unique selves to this project. If you are ever in New York, give me a call!

Sincerely,

Mary DeCarlo
